Nicaragua is known as ‘the country of lakes and volcanoes’. Lakes and lagoons exist throughout the entire country with volcanoes dotting the landscape from border to border, north and south.
There is a great variety amongst these volcanoes; some are huge smoking craters like Volcan Masaya while others like the popular Volcan Mombacho offer hikes to explore its dormancy. Cerro Negro in the north is the youngest of this natural phenomenon and even features a sledding ride down its black sand slope.
The picturesque island of Ometepe, a day trip offered at AQUA, features what may soon be one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World with its two craters standing in the distance over the vast Lake Nicaragua.
